In late October and early November, we participate in the “Dia De Los Muertos” (Day of the Dead) at Centro Cultural de la Raza in Balboa Park. This week-long event, held at one of the most popular Latino social organizations in San Diego, and located in their Balboa Park facility, allows us to set up an “ofrenda” (small altar or shrine) which in past years has honored Hugh Thompson, our chapter namesake, as well as the nameless “Homeless” of San Diego County. Given that more and more recent veterans are Latino, while our chapter is overwhelmingly Caucasian, has encouraged us to reach out to Latino groups with our messages of peace and social justice.
